SPECIAL RESOLUTION: HONOR AND GLORY TO COMRADE HENRI FÜRST!

The inexhaustible bosom of the people nourished them with frugal food and made them walk; class struggle shaped their minds; and the Party, as the primary and highest social form, raised their political conscience, arming it with marxism-leninism-maoism, guiding thought, empowered their combativeness by organizing them in the People’s Guerrilla Army and, smelting them with the masses of the poor peasantry, steeled their bodies and souls in the inextinguishable forge of the people’s war. […] In this way [they], like the great masses of history, go on winning battles beyond the grave, because they live and fight within us, conquering new victories. We feel their vigorous and indelible presence shining and palpitating, teaching us today, tomorrow and forever how to sacrifice our lives on behalf of the Party and the revolution.“

Chairman Gonzalo
„Give Your Life for the Party and the Revolution!“
June 1987

On the occasion of the 1st Plenum of the Provisional Central Committee (PCC) – we, the Communist Party of Switzerland (Red Faction) (CPS(RF)), the red faction in this 2nd Moment of contemporary (imperialist) Swiss society1 pay our solemn homage to our comrades that came before us, the giants on whose shoulders we stand today, to our great leaders that led the deepest and broadest masses with red flag in hand, to our Communist Party of Switzerland (CPS), and to all the martyrs of the Swiss revolution, revolution that is a part of and serves the proletarian world revolution — thus we in consequence also pay our tribute to all those who have given their lives in the struggle for Communism around the world, throughout history. Especially, we pay our homage to the highest concentrated expression of communist heroism seen in this country: Comrade Henri Fürst, a leader of our Party, who was martyred at the hands of the reactionary mercenaries of Swiss imperialism on 09.11.1932, as the first among the fallen on the Geneva Blood Night.

Our Party, in its Western Regional Organ The Red Flag, wrote:

A militant of the revolutionary struggle in every moment, driven by the relentless class consciousness of the rank-and-file worker, Fürst fell victim to the bullets of the murderers of the fascist bourgeoisie, fired at the red front. In his activities in the midst of the Communist Party and the Revolutionary Union Opposition, he always convincingly and actively supported unity in struggle. He died yesterday, his head fractured by the bullets of the machine guns, the same bullets the other worker colleagues also fell victim to, like those who manifested their anti-fascist will on the street, their will to answer through direct action the police repressions of a rotten regime, the day before they died, suffocated by the abundance of goods that we have sweated, that we pay for with our hunger, with our blood.“

Our Comrade Fürst was the first to die on the Blood Night. He went to the soldiers, our class brothers, and told them: Don‘t shoot at us! Turn your guns against the officers! But the recruits were told that they only carried blanks, as the mercenaries at their side fractured our Comrade‘s skull with their machine-guns. Comrade Fürst died on that day, the first among at least 13. And he was the first to be shot, among more than 60.

What did the Party do in the face of the reactionary ban on outside gathering that the old State imposed (or rather: tried to) on the masses? In the face of a counterrevolutionary offensive mounted by the bourgeoisie against our Party, offensive aiming amongst other things at The Red Flag — newspaper of the CPS for the Romandie — but also hailing repression down on militants of the Party, militants like Comrade Jules Daviet, who had sold The Red Flag on that bloody 9th of November and who with great communist heroism survived several gunshot wounds inflicted on him by the miserable mercenaries of the Swiss bourgeoisie, or the repression against Francis Lebet, who was in the leadership of the Geneva Sub-Zonal Committee – what the Party did was call for a general strike in the city of Geneva! And in spite of all attempts of the old State and their labor aristocrats to hold them back, the masses, the proletariat: they answered! In the end, all the sabotage by the socialfascist rats and reformist scabs and their handlers could not break the strike, only weaken it tactically, while strategically strengthening the resolve and combativeness of the proletariat through their betrayal. Once more, the tear separated from the wheat. At the funeral of our Comrade Fürst, on the 12.11.1932, the Party transformed the illegalized procession into a powerful demonstration, where thousands of workers payed homage to their martyr, to all the other fallen worker colleagues, with the Workers‘ Guard at the very front. Militants and worker colleagues from Basel went to lay a wreath at his final resting place — as did his coworkers and colleagues from the factory who had followed our Parties heroic calls of „general strike on Saturday!“ and „transformation of the burials of the victims into a formidable manifestation of protest of the Geneva proletariat!“. Our Comrade was put to rest with Party honors in an open coffin, draped with the red flag with the hammer and sickle, and he received a hero‘s salute with fists raised high as he was put six feet under. The demonstration continued powerfully and unstoppably. As the genocidal mercenaries ordered our soldier brothers to shoot at this procession, the recruits combated and resisted this order and the genocidal Colonel Lederrey, singing the immortal hymn of our international proletarian class: The Internationale. More than 20 soldier heroes were arrested that day. As our Party described:

At the moment that the funeral of our martyred Comrade crossed the Charles Page dock, the troops inside the exposition centre mutinied against their officers. A grave battle burst out, the windows shattered and suddenly, the song of the revolution, The Internationale, arose.

The higher-ups, consumed by fear, fled and there were endless ovations that saluted the passing mortuary convoy, expressing the struggle of the workers against their tormentors.“

After around 16 hours, something happened in the exhibition center, the ceremony of the taking of flags by the Geneva batallions. Colonel Lederrey was delivering a speech when a soldier shouted ‚Murderer!‘. This was the signal for a vast majority of the army directing a hurl of insults at the officer responsible for the massacre.

Lederrey helplessly responded „if I am a murderer, shoot at me!‘ to which the troops responded:

Give us the cartridges!‘ It was then that the Geneva batallion sung the Internationale and blew the windows of the exhibition palace to pieces, fraternized with the workers that accompanied the convoy of our Comrade Fürst.“

The Party also draws some important lessons to be kept in mind:

What a lively illustration of the real tactics to follow with regard to the army! Instead of refusing to serve and thus purging the army of anti-militarists, instead of breaking the rifles, you have to go to the army to win it for the people’s cause, for the fraternization with the workers. It is thanks to this beautiful attitude of the troops that didn’t position themselves against the strike that the grandiose funeral march of our Comrade Fürst – despite the imbecile prohibitions and provocations of the stationed commander and the government – could take place peacefully.“

Just as the Geneva Blood Night was a marvelous expression of communist, proletarian and mass heroism, an example for us all to learn from and embody, so, too, was the general strike in Geneva on 12.11.1932 a glorious day of mass struggle. A second genocide was averted by the masses of soldiers, who joined hands with their class siblings of the workers. Comrade Kascher, the great founder of our Party, had already declared the need for mass action, not in the far future, but right in the present moment. Our Party always applied this, as did the Workers‘ Guard, its military organization, founded by our great Chairman Jakob Herzog.

Our Party decreed:

Fürst died, but in the martyrology of the Geneva proletariat, he stays as a symbol who will give us the power for the final victory of the proletarian revolution in the struggles of tomorrow. We swear that he will he avenged!

[…]

Henri Fürst was the Chairman of the Revolutionary Union Opposition of Geneva, a member of the Geneva Cantonal Committee and of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Switzerland, one of the most devoted militants and always active […]“

Fürst is dead, the idea he defended his whole life is more alive than ever. His example should be followed and in his honor dozens and dozens of colleagues will join our ranks.“

The Internationale was sung on that day by the worker and soldier masses. May it be sung for eternity to come, as we pass through the long years of people‘s war, a long and torturous road, but one that will lead to genuine happiness for the class, the masses and the people; as we build the People‘s Republic of Switzerland, the dictatorship of the proletariat based on the deepest and broadest masses of workers, peasants and soldiers, mainly workers: the new and red Switzerland; and all the way through the proletarian cultural revolutions until ever-shining Communism and beyond, the glorious goal to which Comrade Henri Fürst dedicated his life, teaching us how to give our lives for the Party and the revolution today, tomorrow and always.

We decree that the CPS, at its Reconstituting Congress, will bestow upon Comrade Fürst the highest honor a Communist Party can bestow: The Order of the Hammer and Sickle. Comrade Fürst will forever be enshrined in the martyrology of communist heroism and self-sacrifice, as one of the harbingers of ever-shining Communism, for which he fought all his life and died.

As materialists we understand: all life must end. The question for us is to live and to if necessary die in the service of the class, masses and people. As the Chairman says: „To die for the people is weightier than Mount Tai, but to work for the fascists and die for the exploiters and oppressors is lighter than a feather.“ In the light of this, to express how heavy the death of our Comrade was, we want to conclude with the bolshevik funeral march You Fell Victims to a Fateful Struggle, a song that was performed at the funerals of so many of our martyrs and dead, best children of the class and their people, including comrades like the Great Lenin, Comrade Sverdlov, Comrade Stalin and also Comrade Fürst himself. Today we promise to walk the road of worthiness and righteousness just like Comrade Fürst did, learning from him how to give our lives — acting or potential — for the Party and the revolution. More so, we swear that he will he avenged!

You fell victims in the deadly struggle
Of unselfish love towards your people
You gave whatever you had for it
For life, for honor, for freedom.

You sometimes crouch in moist jails
Judges and executioners had passed judgement
On your boldness
And grudgingly you went with fetters on your feet.

Tyranny shall fall and the people will rebel
The great powerful and free people
Farewell our brothers! You have walked with honor
Your road of worthiness and righteousness.

ANTI-FASCIST DEMONSTRATION IN GENEVA THAT WOULD TURN INTO THE BLOOD-SOAKED NIGHT OF THE 9TH OF NOVEMBER 1932.

Geneva‘s pavement is still stained with worker‘s blood! We will never forget our dead, our flag is red with the blood that was shed! We will avenge Comrade Fürst, we will avenge all the fallen!

THE CORPSES OF THE MURDERED COMRADES AND COLLEAGUES.

GENERAL STRIKE ON THE 12TH OF NOVEMBER 1932 IN GENEVA.

Neither the organized violence of the reaction, nor the sinister action of revisionism and opportunism could stop the workers from leaving their workplaces and taking the streets! When through the machinations by the opportunists and reformist union bosses the tram drivers were driven away from the general strike, workers blocked the tracks and stopped the trams from driving.

The Party raised the slogans:

GENERAL STRIKE!
GENERAL STRIKE ON SATURDAY!
TRANSFORMATION OF THE BURIALS OF THE VICTIMS INTO A FORMIDABLE MANIFESTATION OF PROTEST OF THE GENEVA PROLETARIAT!

FUNERAL PROCESSION ON THE 12.11.1932

The blood that was shed will never be forgotten!

THE WORKER‘S GUARD COLLEAGUES AND COMRADES TRANSFORMING THE FUNERAL PROCESSION OF COMRADE FÜRST INTO A FORMIDABLE MANIFESTATION OF PROTEST OF THE GENEVA PROLETARIAT!

„Fürst is dead, the idea he defended his whole life is more alive than ever. His example should be followed and in his honor dozens and dozens of colleagues will join our ranks.“

PARTY BURIAL OF OUR COMRADE HENRI FÜRST.

Co-workers of our Comrade laid a wreath at his grave and so did workers colleagues and militants from Basel. Their wreath, with red flowers and Hammer and Sickle, reads:

IMAGE DESCRIPTION FROM THE RED FLAG:

The mortal remains of our Comrade Henri Fürst cowardly murdered on the 9th of November in the first row of the demonstration“

A SPEECH DENOUNCING THE MURDER OF OUR COMRADE FÜRST AT HIS FUNERAL.

It is sometimes claimed that this is Jules Humbert-Droz speaking, this is wrong. Humbert-Droz wasn‘t speaking, the Party was speaking, he was simply the relayer, a link in the chain.

COMRADE JULES DAVIET ON HIS HOSPITAL BED.

The Comrade sold The Red Flag during the demonstration and was shot several times. After already shooting him, the rotten bourgeois State would later also condemn him to 4 months of prison on the 15th of May 1933 for his participation and leadership in the antifascist demonstration which culminated in the Geneva Blood Night. His only crime was combating and resisting the bourgeoisie and their mercenaries (both the soldiery and the fascists) — in essence, he was sentenced for being a communist!

THE RED FLAG, ORGAN OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF SWITZERLAND FOR FRENCH-SPEAKING SWITZERLAND. 19.11.1932.:

WORKERS! RISE UP IN MASSES!

AGAINST THE ARRESTS — FOR THE IMMEDIATE LIBERATION OF ALL THE IMPRISIONNED!

Form struggle committees in the factories and on the worksites. Realize the united front of all workers to break the fascist and military reaction. Prepare for answering the reaction’s reinforced provocations against the mass demonstrations and the general strike!“

THE REACTION PERSISTS FIERCLY!

THE REFORMIST BOSSES BETRAY!

THE WORKERS HAVE TO ACT!“

AND NOW, WHAT IS TO BE DONE?“

THE ACCUSED OF THE FARCE OF A TRIAL AIMED AT CRIMINALIZING THE ANTIFASCISTS AND VICTIMS OF THE GENOCIDE, INCLUDING OUR COMRADES JULES DAVIET AND FRANCIS LEBET (THE LATTER WAS IN THE LEADERSHIP OF THE GENEVA SUBZONAL COMMITEEE). ILLEGITIMATE TRIAL OF A GENOCIDAL ROTTEN REGIME, A GENOCIDAL ROTTEN STATE.

More repression against comrades would follow, because the reaction was never going to forgive the communists for surviving the genocide.

Henri Fürst was the Chairman of the Revolutionary Union Opposition of Geneva, a member of the Geneva Cantonal Committee and of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Switzerland, one of the most devoted militants and always active, who regularly collaborated with The Red Flag and supplied it with the latest union news.

APPENDIX 3

THE FORMIDABLE DEMONSTRATION OF OUR COMRADE’S FUNERAL“

The Red Flag
Organ of the Communist Party of Switzerland for French-Speaking Switzerland
14.11.1932

The bosses of the syndicate union didn’t want street demonstrations just like their corporate brothers, the reformist bosses, want the the workers to stay at home!

Hence, they didn’t do anything to organize a formidable demonstration for the funerals of the victims of the shooting, happy about the decision of the bourgeoisie to hold funerals at the expense of the city, dispersed and isolated during different times of day. Hence, Geneva didn’t want the long and sinister march of over ten coffins, the work of their government of murderers!

The Communist Party had decided to increase its effort to hold a funeral for our dear Comrade Fürst, a large street demonstration against the murder of Wednesday, to demand the punishment of the culprits, the arrest of the officers and of F. Martin, the ones responsible for the crime!

Despite the prohibition of street gatherings, launched by the government, the commanding officer and the dear reformists, and the evident danger that such a demonstration involved, over four thousand workers gathered in front of the mortuary building, on the Battoirs street and on the adjacent streets to express – at the occasion of the funeral of one of them, of one of the best militants of the Geneva proletariat – their hatred for the regime of corruption and blood that reddened Geneva’s pavement with the blood of the working class.

The body was displayed in front of the building, the crowd marched and could realize in what way the victims were arranged. Two Comrades took up the word and drew the conclusions of the events of the 9th of November, repeating what was put forward by our Party and encouraging the workers to follow Fürst’s example, who always fought for the revolution.

A pastor managed to infiltrate the family of our Comrade, but one didn’t allow him a single sermon, which would be an insult to the memory of our late Henri Fürst.

At the Charles Page dock, where the honors were given, a crowd of eight to ten thousand people showed in what way the working class honors their own who fall victim to the revolutionary struggle. The Party and the Communist Youth don’t allow that such a militant like Fürst be buried alone at St-Georges, at the order of a government that only invokes disgust and contempt in the population.

And directed by our Party, the Worker’s Guard at the head, 1.000 people arrived at the cemetary. A worker’s delegation from Basel provided its solidarity with the victims of Geneva with a magnificent wreath.

Only at nightfall did this day of combat and revolutionary will come to an end, this day where a large number of workers understood this time what the path is that they must follow.

Fürst is dead, the idea he defended his whole life is more alive than ever. His example should be followed and in his honor dozens and dozens of colleagues will join our ranks.

Let us also note the songs performed by the Proletarian Theatre, the revolutionary Russion funeral march that made a deep impression.

The workers of the oven factory Le Rève also submitted a wreath, which demonstrates the high esteem Fürst had in the midst of the metal workers, despite or mabye because of his expulsion from the FOMH [Swiss Federation of Metal Manufacturers, Workers and Watchmakers].

At the moment the honors were given, the military authorities approached two units of machine gun soldiers who set up camp in a nearby school. This odious provocation was met by a wave of whistles. But the discipline of the working class on the one hand and the events that unfolded themselves among the Geneva soldiers at the exposition centre on the other hand made the officers reflect. They preferred not to insist in their provocation and to leave the street open for the working class despite the orders of the commanding officer.

The Soldiers Rise Up

At the moment that the funeral of our martyred comrade crossed the Charles Page dock, the troops inside the exposition centre mutinied against their officers. A grave battle burst out, the windows shattered and suddenly, the song of the Revolution, The Internationale, arose.

The higher-ups, consumed by fear, fled and there were endless ovations that saluted the passing mortuary convoy, expressing the struggle of the workers against their tormentors.

In the evening, three new battalions, the 6th, 11th and 12th, arrived at the Geneva train station, as well as the whole federal staff.

APPENDIX 4

THE GENERAL STRIKE IN GENEVA“

The Red Flag
Organ of the Communist Party of Switzerland for French-Speaking Switzerland
14.11.1932

Since the bloody and murderous shooting of Wednesday evening, our Party launched in the working masses of Geneva the slogan „general strike!“. This strike was supposed to start immediately – Thursday morning already – being the direct and formidable response of the working class to the murders of the previous day. But the socialdemocratic and reformists leaders instead of meeting in emergency, laid down tranquilly and discussed the strike only on Thursday evening! 24 hours had been lost in idle talk. Thursday during the day the great leaders of Swiss syndicalism and of the socialdemocratic party, the Reinhard, Grimm, Ilg. Schurch, René Robert etc. were in Geneva and in Lausanne to strangle the general strike of Lausanne decided on Wednesday evening, for Thursday afternoon, under the pressure of our Party and to prevent the Geneva proletariat to reply how it should to the crime of the soldiery and of the government.

Never has the deep divorce between the will to struggle of the working masses and the sabotage, the treason, of the reformist leaders appeared with such clarity. The workers of Geneva, Thursday, were waiting the order to strike, wanted to struggle, while the socialdemocratic and reformist leaders gave it their all to avoid and prevent the struggle. Thursday evening, the Socialdemocratic Party of Geneva, – this party that the workers thought on the „left“ – pronounced itself against the general strike. The Union of Trade Unions took a similar position of capitulation and miserable give-up, while the Communist Party alone launched since Thursday afternoon flyers calling the working class to reply by the immediate general strike to the crime of the bourgeoisie. Thursday evening, after taking knowledge of the decisions of treason of the Socialdemocratic Party and the Union of Trade Unions, the Committee of our Party, interpreting the will of the working masses, decided to launch over the head of the reformist bosses, the slogans of „general strike on Saturday“ and „transformation of the burial of the victims into a formidable manifestation of protest of the Genevaproletariat. The same evening, in the whole country, our Party alerted the masses and organized formidable meetings of protest.

However under the influence of the slogans of the Communist Party and thanks to the agitation work done by our comrades, the Geneva working class rose in front of the shameful socialdemocratic-reformist capitulation. The delegates assembly of the Union of Trade Unions, on Friday, rallied itself with a strong majority to the slogan General strike on Saturday. The reformist leaders, during this meeting, were taken aside, the sad René Robert was reminded that he himself shot Geneva workers; the workers didn’t let themselves be chloroformed by the Rosselets, Schurch and company. But, the saboteurs of the labor movement didn’t admit defeat, with the strike decided, they did everything that was still in their power to sabotage it and strangle it.

The leaders of the Union of Trade Unions, before communicating this decision to the whole working class, communicated it to the Department of Justice and the police, to the sinister Martin, responsible for the massacre of Wednesday and thus permitted the State Council to decree the mobilization and to prepare the repression. Then, understanding that the tram strike was an essential element to the success of the general strike, all the effort of the reformist leaders was directed, in the night, not to organize as widely as possible the cessation of work, but to stab the strike by provoking the defection of the tram employees, and by pushing them to be yellows. Perrin, socialdemocratic national councilor and permanent secretary was in person in Geneva to realize this work of treason. Never had we seen so many reformist leaders in Geneva. When it is to struggle against the lowering of wages and defend the working class, we don’t see them being so active! But to prevent and reduce the protest of the workers against the fascist murderers, for that they are there!

With 125 voices against 95, under the pressure of the reformist leaders, the tram employees deserted the common struggle that their delegates had voted with a majority at the Union of Trade Unions. Thousands of workers, on Saturday morning, trembled with anger when hearing the noises of trams. They understood immediately that the reformist treason had made its work! The call of the Union of Trade Unions hid another surprise.

While the slogan of general strike disappeared in the gray of the text, came out in great underlined letters, the order to not protest in the streets. The clerical yellow of the guilds called its members to stay at home! Between the leaflet of Rosselet and the one of the clericals, there is only a difference of words. The message is the same.

The strike was carried through in metallurgy, construction, wood and some other branches. Groups of workers tried their hardest to stop the march of the trams and managed to stop the traffic for a part of the day. The workers replied as it corresponded to the criminal bourgeoisie and its reformist servants.

APPENDIX 5

THE MOBILIZATION OF GENEVA TROOPS TRANSFORMED INTO A GREAT ANTI-MILITARIST DEMONSTRATION“

The Red Flag
Organ of the Communist Party of Switzerland for French-Speaking Switzerland
14.11.1932

The reformist bosses of the Union of Trade Unions of Geneva, after having been defeated at the delegate assembly by the combativeness of the workers that overtook the general strike, following the call issued on Wednesday evening by the Communist Party, found nothing better than to inform the murderers of the working class of this decision. Frédéric Martin was therefore immediately made aware of the decisions of the working class and the State Council decided to respond to the strike call with the mobilization of the Geneva regiments.

The Communist Party already mobilized for the fraternization through the special edition of „The Red Flag”. Before the draft, it immediately distributed leaflets, printed with modest means, to invite the soldiers to fraternize.

Doing this demonstration was a formidable slap in the face to the government and the bloodthirsty soldiery that wanted to repeat its brutalities and crimes of Wednesday on Saturday.

The Geneva soldiers went into the barracks determined not to shoot at their brothers, their wives, their children, their fathers and their mothers, but on the contrary determined to defend them against the criminal undertakings of the military clique.

Many didn’t respond to the draft or went to the barracks many hours late.

But above all, the state of mind of the troops was far from responding to the criminal intentions of the State Council. Soldiers even threatened their officers with their weapons, affirming their determination to not shoot or to shoot at the correct side. The commander also sent known revolutionary elements home. He hoped to purge the army of the seeds of revolutionary disorganization. A high number of our comrades were also sadly demobilized in the barracks. But this purge wasn’t enough to reestablish discipline. The Geneva troops entered into conflict with the Valais troops lent by the reactionary Valaisans to the Geneva government.

An officer who wanted to rally the army in order to prepare it for its „patriotic” duty of worker repression saw himself isolated and his voice was drowned by the singing of the „International”. The soldiers refused to take the ammunition.

What a lively illustration of the real tactics to follow with regard to the army! Instead of refusing to serve and thus purging the army of anti-militarists, instead of breaking the rifles, you have to go to the army to win it for the people’s cause, for the fraternization with the workers. It is thanks to this beautiful attitude of the troops that didn’t position themselves against the strike that the grandiose funeral march of our Comrade Fürst – despite the imbecile prohibitions and provocations of the stationed commander and the government – could take place peacefully.

The government, unsure of its troops and certain that they were capable of turning their arms around against it, was forced to let the demonstrating happen! The road was free for the working class! It reconquered the pavement thanks to the attitude of the troops!

Bravo, conscious Geneva soldiers! Continue! Henceforth also, the tireless propaganda of the Communist Party bore fruits.

Let us intensify our action and our propaganda, a lot of minds must still be enlightened, the Valaisans and the Vaudois must be won.

We will make it there! Onward! Reader, come and enlarge our ranks and reinforce our action.

The soldiers shouted „murderers!” at their officers.

After around 16 hours, something happened in the exhibition center, the ceremony of the taking of flags by the Geneva batallions. Colonel Lederrey was delivering a speech when a soldier shouted „Murderer!”. This was the signal for a vast majority of the army directing a hurl of insults at the officer responsible for the massacre.

Lederrey helplessly responded „if I am a murderer, shoot at me!” to which the troops responded:

„Give us the cartridges!” It was then that the Geneva batallion sung the „Internationale” and blew the windows of the exhibition palace to pieces, fraternized with the workers that accompanied the convoy of our Comrade Fürst.

Around twenty soldiers were arrested.
