ROMANIA: Russia Threatens War over Ukrainian Air Force Landings

  • The Air Force of Ukraine has been flying over the airspace and possibly landing in neighboring countries, mainly Romania.
  • A speaker of the Russian Ministry of Defense has condemned countries like Romania for opening their air space to Ukrainian military aircraft and stated that «their subsequent use against Russian forces could be seen as the involvement of these countries in the armed conflict».
  • A declaration of war or bombing against Romania, Poland, Slovakia or Hungary would result in an immediate activation of NATO‘s Article 5 and therefore an imperialist 3rd World War between Russian and Chinese imperialism on the one hand and U.S. imperialism and its allies and lackeys on the other hand.

«Imperialism does exist in this world. In our opinion, Russia may be called [an imperialist] country, and this system engenders war. Not that you or we or the third world want a world war. Nor do the people in the rich countries want a world war. This sort of thing happens irrespectively of human will.»

Mao Zedong — Quoted in Editorial Department of the People‘s Daily: «Chairman Mao‘s Theory of the Differentiation of the Three Worlds Is a Major Contribution to Marxism-Leninism» (01.11.1977)

In a statement by the main speaker of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Igor Konashenkov, Russian imperialism threatened to expand its war of aggression against Ukraine to encompass other Eastern European nations as well. According to 20 Minutes:

«Virtually the entire combat-capable air force of the Kiev regime was destroyed. But we know from reliable sources that Ukrainian aircraft have flown to Romania and other neighboring countries. The use of the airfield network of these countries as a base for Ukrainian military aircraft and their subsequent use against Russian forces could be seen as the involvement of these countries in the armed conflict(Our emphasis.)

If Romania and other similar countries «could be seen as [belligerents] in the armed conflict», that implies a Russian attack against such countries as a «deterrent» in order to stop the use of their airfields by the Air Force of Ukraine. Such an attack would inevitably result in immediate activation of NATO‘s Article 5, which states:

«The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.»

Therefore, the threat made by Konashenkov is clearly a threat to launch an imperialist 3rd World War, which must be exposed and condemned. Specifically:

1. Russian imperialism, as the main aggressor in Eastern Europe and main threat to world peace today, must be condemned and fought. Their aggressions against Ukraine, Moldavia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Belarus must be condemned, as must their threats against Romania, Finland, Sweden and other countries. The new Tsar Putin‘s dreams of rebuilding his lost empire will crash and burn against the resistance of the Ukrainian people, as well as against the resistance of the Russian people. There is no peace for the new Tsar either at home or abroad.

2. U.S. imperialism, its imperialist allies and its reactionary lackeys should refrain from interfering in any way in the Russo-Ukrainian War, as it will inevitably lead to an armed confrontation with Russian imperialism. They should be condemned for their warmongering and their hypocrisy in supporting only national self-determination for «civilized» Europeans. The war against Ukraine is in no way different from the Yankee invasion of Iraq. The imperialist superpowers must stop using Europe as their strategic chessboard.

3. The Ukrainian Government has been placed materially on the side of the people by the present events, especially through the general arming of the Ukrainian people. However, it is still a reactionary bourgeois-nationalist government, which continues to beg for NATO intervention against Russia, such as in the form of a «no-fly zone» over Ukraine. This must be condemned, as it would obviously lead to a 3rd World War. They must also be condemned for their use of nazi, fascist and reactionary foreign volunteers, who will return home with combat experience and be a threat to the people of their home countries after the war, as well as their use of the neo-nazi Azov Battalion.

4. Should an imperialist 3rd World War break out, all belligerent States, without exception, must be condemned. In such a situation, only the people waging wars of resistance must be supported, not their warmongering governments. The Ukrainian and other Governments would no longer be on the side of the people in such a situation.

The imperialists and reactionaries are pushing the world toward an imperialist 3rd World War. This is occurring in spite of the intentions of any particular imperialist superpower and power and due to the objective march of historical events. Nonetheless, it is the imperialists and their reactionaries who are pushing in the direction of war. They must be fought at every step of the way. In the previous week, over 100,000 people have demonstrated across Switzerland in a series of peace demonstrations. It is necessary to develop a peace movement of a new type, in order to transform imperialist war and imperialist «neutrality» into revolutionary civil war, so as to either stop the imperialist world war with revolution or to prevent its outbreak by means of revolution. For this purpose, the working class of every country needs a strong and determined Communist Party, revolutionary armed forces and a broad, anti-imperialist united front, which can only be built up in the course of the struggle against the main enemy in one‘s own country and its accomplices abroad. Specifically, we need to immediately start building clandestine anti-imperialist organizations and alliances which cannot be smashed by the inevitable wave of repression which a world war would imply — also in hypocritically «neutral» Switzerland, the ruling class of which has always grown rich and fat off the blood and spoils of war. What Mao Zedong said continues to be true:

«With regard to the question of world war, there are but two possibilities: One is that the war will give rise to revolution and the other is that revolution will prevent the war.»
