Self-Criticism on the Question of Taiwan

Statement by the Editorial Board of The Red Flag concerning an error in the recent People's War Report.
By the Editorial Board

In the recent People’s War Report, published on 25.03.2022, the contributor responsible for writing these articles had written:

Since the sea a country wants to claim must border on the country‘s territory, China is simply annexing small groups of islands or even just rocks in order to extend the «South Chinese Sea» and lay claims to all the riches and shipping supply chains in the area. China is legitimizing this by referring to a decades-old sea map from 1947 that declares 80% of the sea to be the «South Chinese Sea». In doing so, it is violating the territorial sovereignity of all countries around the sea (meaning Vietnam, Malaya, Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan).

This turn of phrase slipped past our Editorial Board when the People’s War Report was edited. It has since been corrected. We want to profoundly thank the Chinese colleague who pointed this out to us in a letter criticising this completely erroneous viewpoint, which appeared in the recent article. We thank this colleague for the example they have set to other Chinese readers of The Red Flag by criticising us, and we hope that our Chinese audience will continue to follow our website in the interest of propagating Marxism-Leninism-Maoism in China, including Taiwan Province.

Our Editorial Board wants to make it very clear that we do not, nor have we ever, considered Taiwan Province to be an independent country. Taiwan Province is an inseparable part of China, which was artificially and cruelly separated from the rest of China by the U.S. imperialists and the Guomindang reactionaries following Chiang Kaishek’s defeat in the Chinese people’s war of liberation in 1949. It is a Chinese province which suffers under the semi-colonial and semi-feudal exploitation and oppression of the U.S. and other imperialists.

Taiwan Province should be reunified with mainland China. This is the consistent position of our Editorial Board. This was also the consistent position of the Communist Party of China under the Leadership of Comrade Mao Zedong. In the Report of the Central Committee to the 10th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, delivered by Zhou Enlai, the Chinese Party stated clearly:

Taiwan Province is our homeland’s sacred territory, and the people in Taiwan are our kith and kin. We have infinite concern for our compatriots in Taiwan, who love and long for the homeland. Our compatriots in Taiwan can have a bright future only by returning to the embrace of the homeland. Taiwan must be liberated. Our great homeland must be unified. This is the common aspiration and sacred duty of the people of all nationalities of the country, including our compatriots in Taiwan. Let us strive together to attain this goal.

Zhou Enlai: «Report to the 10th National Congress of the Communist Party of China» (24.08.1973)

Our Editorial Board is tactically opposed to any invasion of Taiwan Province by the Chinese social-imperialists. To live under the social-fascist rule of the Chinese revisionists headed by Xi Jinping would not benefit the people of Taiwan Province, nor would it benefit the people of mainland China. We support the reunification of China under the dictatorship of the proletariat as a socialist country, which requires the counter-restoration of socialism by means of a reinitiated people’s war, directed by a refounded Communist Party of China. There is no other way out for the Chinese people. If «only socialism can save China», then certainly only socialism can save Taiwan Province.
