UKRAINE: Russian Imperialism Launches War of Aggression
WHAT IT‘S ALL ABOUT:
- Russia has launched a war of aggression against Ukraine.
- The Western imperialists, headed by U.S. imperialism, are preparing for a world war.
- In places where there is not a state of war, it is necessary to fight to prevent it with revolution.
- In places where there is a state of war, it is necessary to stop it with revolution.
«Imperialism has put the fate of European civilization at stake: this war, if there does not follow a series of successful revolutions, will soon be followed by other wars; the fable of the ‹last war› is an empty, harmful fable, a philistine ‹myth› […]. If not today, then certainly tomorrow; if not during the present war, then after it; if not in this war, then in the following one, the proletarian banner of civil war will rally not only hundreds of thousands of enlightened workers, but also millions of semi-proletarians and small-bourgeois who are now being fooled by chauvinism and who, besides being frightened and benumbed by the horrors of the war, will also be enlightened, taught, aroused, organized, hardened and prepared for a war against the bourgeoisie both of ‹their own› and of the ‹foreign› countries.»V. I. Lenin: «Position and Tasks of the Socialist International» (01.11.1914)
At 04:00 on Thursday the 24th of February, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the order to invade Ukraine in response to what he termed «Ukrainian aggression». This order came just two days after the Russian Parliament unilaterally voted to recognize the two Russian colonies on Ukrainian territory, the self-proclaimed «People‘s Republics» of Lugansk and Donetsk. In the order, Putin stated: «Circumstances require us to take decisive and immediate action. The People‘s Republics of Donbass turned to Russia with a request for help. In this regard, in accordance with Article 51, part 7 of the U.N. Charter, with the sanction of the Federation Council and in pursuance of the friendship treaties ratified by the Federal Assembly and mutual assistance with the Donetsk and Lugansk People‘s Republics, I have decided to conduct a special military operation.»
Putin further made the claim that the operation serves to «denazify» and «demilitarize» Ukraine. Only a few days before the invasion began, Putin had furthermore delivered a speech in which he questioned Ukraine‘s very right to national self-determination, stating that an independent Ukrainian State had never existed before the founding of the Socialist Council Republic of Ukraine by Lenin following the October Revolution. He then threatened to abolish Ukrainian statehood, saying: «We are ready to show Ukraine what real decommunization means.» He further stated that the Ukrainian State is «an anti-Russia which is antagonistic toward us» «on our own historical territories».
Moreover, Putin threatened nuclear warfare against other imperialist powers who may want to intervene militarily against the Russian invasion, stating that it would lead to «consequences that you have never experienced in your history» — only two weeks after he had stated on February 10th: «Of course the [military] potential of NATO and Russia are incomparable. We understand it. But we also understand that Russia is one of the leading nuclear States, and by some modern components it even outperforms many. There will be no winners. And you will be pulled into this conflict against your will. You won‘t even have time to blink your eye when you execute Article 5.»
This open and unprovoked act of aggression carried out by Russian imperialism under the leadership of the fascist Putin, who seeks nothing less than to restore the borders of the old Russian Empire and make himself Tsar, is a sign that the main contradiction at the world level is shifting. For decades, the bloc of imperialist powers headed by U.S. imperialism has been pursuing a strategy of strategic encirclement against Russia, so as to prepare a new, imperialist 3rd World War. The wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and the provocations against Iran are all part of this current. On the other hand, Russia‘s own wars, occupations and provocations against Moldavia, Georgia, Ukraine, Chechnya and other countries all represent part of a counter-current, Russia‘s offensive within the larger U.S. offensive.
This process is now coming to a close — Russian imperialism will no longer permit itself to be further encircled. This open war of aggression against Ukraine is an act of desperation. This indicates one thing and one thing only — the 3rd World War will soon take place. Either it will be the result of the war in Ukraine or this war will simply be its prologue — either way, it will happen. The main contradiction at the world level is shifting from being between the imperialist superpowers and powers on the one hand and the oppressed nations they exploit on the other hand, to being between the imperialist superpowers and powers themselves. U.S. imperialism has no willingness to back down in the face of the Russian counter-offensive, as was clearly stated in the recent NATO statement: «We have decided, in line with our defensive planning to protect all Allies, to take additional steps to further strengthen deterrence and defence across the Alliance. […] Our commitment to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty is iron-clad. We stand united to defend each other.»
At the same time, the main contradiction in Ukraine itself has now become the contradiction between the Ukrainian nation and Russian imperialism. As Russian imperialism seeks to immediately annex the warlord States in Donbass and to create a puppet State covering the rest of Ukraine similar to the Russian colony of Belarus, the entire Ukrainian nation is uniting against this threat to its existence. Right now, what is important is to support the struggle of the Ukrainians — whether it is waged by the armed forces of the bourgeois State or by the armed people themselves — because events have forced them all, except for a few national traitors such as the so-called «Communist Party of Ukraine», to stand on the side of the people against imperialist aggression.
There are three possible outcomes to this war. The first possibility is that Russian imperialism manages to occupy large parts of Ukraine and either executes or imprisons the Government in Kiev, before a remnant Government is established at Lvov, which is then protected by U.N. or NATO troops moving in as «peacekeepers». In the first possible outcome, an informal ceasefire would emerge as a result, due to Russia‘s strategic inferiority compared with NATO. In the second possible outcome, this leads to the beginning of an imperialist world war, which would be a nuclear war. In the third possible outcome, all of Ukraine is simply turned into a Russian colony without «aid» from NATO or the U.N.
If Ukraine is turned into a Russian colony, then the occupation will be bloody, painful and expensive for Russian imperialism. 80% of the Russian ground forces are currently engaged in Ukraine. These troops would be bogged down in a hostile country of over 40,000,000 people, who since 2014 have had easy access to firearms and ammunition. Both the Ukrainian armed forces and the Ukrainian people would organize themselves clandestinely and carry out a widespread campaign of guerrilla warfare against the Russian occupation. This would not only be a drain on Russia comparable only to the Vietnam War — it would occupy so many of the Russian forces that the opportunity could easily be seized upon by national-liberation forces in Chechnya, Dagestan, Moldavia, Georgia and other countries, where Russian imperialism maintains its rule only by means of blood and lead.
If the 3rd World War breaks out as a result of the war in Ukraine, it will obviously be a disaster for humanity. However, the material effect of such a war will be to immensely intensify all contradictions in the world. The imperialists, too busy fighting one another, would be unable to maintain their rule in the colonies and semi-colonies, and country after country would break loose and gain independence. In the imperialist countries themselves, armed struggles would break out in order to end the war by any means necessary. In the occupied countries, national-liberation struggles would develop in the form of guerrilla warfare, just as during the 2nd World War. And in the «neutral» countries, the worsening of living conditions, restrictions on democratic rights and trade with warmongering States would all fuel the indignation of the masses, who would rise up against the capitalists of their own country to put an end to the misery.
In short, as Mao Zedong pointed out, either the world revolution prevents the world war, or the world war brings about the world revolution. Therefore, while we must take the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine seriously in the tactical sense, it is not that scary in the strategical sense, and is really just the Russian imperialists tying their own nooses. At the same time, the current rapid expansion of NATO and the build-up of forces in Eastern Europe, while tactically a preparation for world war, is strategically nothing more than the imperialists increasing their criminal occupation of the oppressed nations of Turkey/North Kurdistan, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, and it will inevitably lead to the U.S. and other Western imperialists being kicked out of Eastern Europe, just as the Russians eventually will, by the people themselves.
In summary, the tasks of the communists are:
1. In Russia, the Communist Party (the Russian Maoist Party) must immediately prepare the initiation of armed struggle against its expansionist, imperialist bourgeoisie, which is the main threat to world peace today.
2. In Ukraine, the genuine communists must refound their Party and organize clandestinely so as to participate in the coming guerrilla struggle for the national liberation of their homeland.
3. In the countries not currently at war, such as Switzerland, the communists must work to found or refound their Parties and organize clandestinely, in preparation of launching the armed struggle as soon as possible — in order to either end the war of aggression which will be pursued by their own governments, end the status of fake «neutrality» which will be pursued by their own governments, or fight against the occupation of their countries which will be occupied by one or the other imperialist superpower.
These are the only possible courses of action for communists and proletarian revolutionaries in the present moment.
