USA: New Fascist Attacks on Queer People Aim to Promote Pogromist Violence
- The fascist Republican Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, is calling for a pogrom against transgender children and their families. He is doing so by means of decree and not through the State Legislature.
- The U.S. State of Florida is currently in the process of passing a law which would ban any discussion in schools of queer history, oppression and living, in practice an effort to bring back lumpen-pogromist ignorance and the AIDS pandemic. In addition, at least seven federal states have proposed anti-transgender laws this year alone.
- The moves are part of a counter-revolutionary wave directed by the fascist faction of the Republican Party, in retaliation for the 2020-21 revolutionary wave across the USA. The attacks on queer people aim to strengthen patriarchy and are connected to the recently passed anti-abortion laws in the country.
«We have not said much about the homosexual at all, but we must relate to the homosexual movement because it is a real thing. And I know through reading, and through my life experience and observations that homosexuals are not given freedom and liberty by anyone in the society. They might be the most oppressed people in the society.
[…] there is nothing to say that a homosexual cannot also be a revolutionary. And maybe I‘m now injecting some of my prejudice by saying that ‹even a homosexual can be a revolutionary›. Quite the contrary, maybe a homosexual could be the most revolutionary.
When we have revolutionary conferences, rallies, and demonstrations, there should be full participation of the gay liberation movement and the women‘s liberation movement.»Huey P. Newton: «The Women‘s Liberation and Gay Liberation Movements» (15.08.1970)
The Republican Governor of the State of Texas, the fascist Greg Abbott, has issued an order to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to «investigate any reported instances of children undergoing ‹abusive› gender-transitioning procedures», after the Attorney General of Texas stated that «state law characterizes the procedures as child abuse». The «procedures» in question refer to safe and standard medical procedures for transgender children — therapy, medicine temporarily blocking puberty, and for older transgender youths, hormone replacement treatment — which are universally recognized by health experts, including the WHO, as the only possible treatment for gender dysphoria (the medical condition treated by changing one‘s sex and gender).
Abbott and his clique of frenzied queer-antagonistic pogromists in the Republican Party play on people‘s fear about children undergoing «reassignment surgeries that can cause sterilization, mastectomies, removals of otherwise healthy body parts». No transgender child has ever been offered to undergo any kind of surgical procedure. This is nothing but demagogy. Reassignment surgeries are then mentioned alongside «administration of puberty-blocking drugs or supraphysiologic doses of testosterone or estrogen» in order to establish a supposed similiarity. There is no such thing. Puberty-blocking drugs are purely temporary and do not cause any permanent harm — the permanent harm in this question would be if a transgender child were forced to go through the puberty of the opposite sex, which would leave the person traumatized and at a high risk of mental illness, self-harm and suicide for the rest of their life. As for estrogen and testosterone, such drugs are administered only once the person in question is old enough to fulfill the requirements of informed consent — that is, is considered medically an adult — and they simply have the effect of inducing the puberty of the correct sex. There is nothing abusive about these procedures — what is abusive is to deny this treatment to people who need it.
Introducing such a law in itself would be extremely reactionary and patriarchal. But that is not all. According to CBS News:
«All licensed professionals in the state who directly interact with children, including teachers and doctors, could face criminal penalties for not reporting the procedures, Abbott noted in his letter. The general public could also be subject to penalties for failing to make reports.»
This — issuing an order which is valid for not only State employees, but all licensed professionals and the population in general — makes this order from Governor Abbott a fascist, pogromist law. It is no different from the pogromist laws of Nazi Germany, which also relied on forcing or bribing members of the people into snitching on communists, socialists, trade-unionists, Jews, travelling people, Slavic people, queer people or the handicapped, so as to enable the fascist State to carry out its genocidal activities. These children will be removed from their families and placed in the «care» of a State which denies them their fundamental human rights. This is a reactionary, patriarchal, pogromist, fascist and downright genocidal law against queer people.
Nobody should be surprised by this law. According to NBC News:
«Throughout the first week of the year, state lawmakers in at least seven states proposed laws that would limit the rights of transgender and nonbinary youths.
Republican lawmakers in Arizona, Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, New Hampshire and South Dakota introduced at least nine measures that target trans and nonbinary youths, such as their ability to participate in sports, receive gender-affirming care or use the bathroom.»
Furthermore, the law has already been put into practice. An employee of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services itself is being investigated for having a transgender child, reports Microsoft News. The family in question is suing Abbott for having «trampled on the Constitutional rights of transgender children, their parents and professionals who provide vital care to transgender children».
The «Don‘t Say Gay» bill which is about to pass in Florida is another key attack against the rights of queer people in the USA. The bill will prohibit any discussion by teachers, staff, parents or students about queer history, oppression, rights and health in Florida schools. This will inevitably lead to a spike in anti-queer pogromist violence and a spike in AIDS cases, due to the promotion of ignorance about sexual health. This bill, too, is a pogromist law, albeit less overt than the Texas directive.
These new patriarchal attacks against queer people come after a wave of patriarchal attacks against women‘s rights in the USA in previous years. The worst of these patriarchal attacks came in the form of the Heartbeat Acts, which followed the U.S. Supreme Court‘s moves to abolish constitutional bans on anti-abortion laws. Under the Texas Heartbeat Act, which was also drafted by the fascist Abbott, all abortions are banned after six weeks of pregnancy — also in the case of pregnancies resulting from incest and other forms of rape. Once more, the fascist Heartbeat Act relies on individuals suing those who get or provide abortions, not State persecution.
Governor Abbott represents a broader fascist trend inside the Republican Party. Under his directorship of the State of Texas, first as Attorney General and then as Governor, not only did he oversee the implementation of the Heartbeat Act and this new anti-queer directive; he also has obstructed the separation of Church and State at every opportunity, restricted the right of the people to carry firearms in public (in spite of his supposedly «gun-loving» rhetoric), upheld the Texan ban on same-sex marriage, overseen gerrymandering of electoral districts in order to eliminate Black and Chicano voting, and so on, and so forth. What especially establishes Greg Abbott as a fascist is his reliance on mobilizing reactionary strata of the people for his reactionary plans, circumventing the legal methods of repression of the capitalist State.
Anyone who thinks that the patriarchal attacks against women and queer people in the USA are not interrelated is deluding themself. U.S. imperialism is in a period of decline and collapse world-wide, which is reflected in even more wars of aggression abroad and a worse reactionarization of the State apparatus at home. The USA is going in for fascism, a process which is being propelled by the fascist faction of the Republican Party — those people who supported the aborted State coup of January 2021. This fascist trend is necessary for U.S. imperialism to maintain its domestic rule over not only the increasingly rebellious working class (which has directed several strike waves in recent years), but also the mainly Chicano share-cropping peasantry, the Native people who increasingly fight against land grabs, and the mainly Black slave population in the prisons. U.S. imperialism is trying to save itself from being destroyed from the inside — and in doing so, it needs to maintain a rigid patriarchal family structure, which serves to enslave the working masses of all nations and to pacify the bribed White labor aristocracy.
Anti-fascism is always concrete. Those calling themselves «revolutionaries» or even «communists» today in the USA who do not condemn these fascist attacks, and prefer to talk about more «proper» topics, such as women‘s or labor struggles, are nothing but short-sighted traitors and scabs. The queer struggle is part of the people‘s struggle, and as the experience of Nazi Germany clearly shows, attacks on queer people indicate that a broader wave of anti-people attacks are about to come. Our position must be clear:
1. We must defend the rights conquered by women and queer people against reactionary-patriarchal attacks, and we must fight to conquer more rights as part of the working-class movement.
2. While fighting for rights and improvements, we must make it clear that the experience of all counter-revolutions clearly shows that only a socialist society under the dictatorship of the proletariat is capable of creating the material basis for women‘s and queer liberation.
3. We must expose and condemn opportunists who separate the women‘s struggle and the queer struggle from one another, by pointing out that this only leads to the mutual defeat of both movements. Only a united front of all liberation movements under the directorship of the working class and its Communist Party can lead to real victory in the struggle for people‘s emancipation.
Queer people everywhere should fight for their demands without relying on the bourgeois State apparatus for help. The revolutionary violence of the queer masses at Compton‘s Cafeteria and Stonewall showed a clear example to follow in the struggle for liberation. After the Gay Pride movement got coopted by the gay bourgeoisie, the AIDS pandemic hit, and it was once more working-class queer people who took the lead in the struggles of the 1980s and ‘90s. Today, again, it is time for working-class queer people to take back the demonstrations and organizations from those rich homosexuals and university students who have usurped them, and turn the queer liberation movement into a real revolutionary force to be counted on.
