#INTRODUCTION NOTE

These are four sentences written down by Comrade Mao Zedong during a talk with Hua Guofeng in Beijing, China in the evening of the 30th of April, 1976. Published together for the first time.

The sentences were written down after Hua Guofeng briefed Comrade Mao Zedong on the development of the Movement to Criticize Deng Xiaoping and Beat Back the Right-Deviationist Attempt to Reverse Correct Verdicts, for which Hua was responsible.

In spite of the fact that Hua Guofeng would later use one of these sentences — «With you in charge, I'm at ease» — to present himself as «Chairman Mao's chosen successors» after the October 1976 counter-revolutionary State coup, the context of this sentence had been completely different. Rather, it referred only to Hua's leadership of the Movement to Criticize Deng Xiaoping, according to the testimony of Zhang Yufeng, who was also present at the briefing. Moreover, according to testimony presented at the trial of Comrades Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, and others, the fourth sentence — «Consult with Comrade Jiang Qing when matters arise» — was specifically hidden from the public by the counter-revolutionaries.
